'The Chrysler Building' by John Elwell, 2011
A magnificent and completely unique sculptural aluminium model of the Chrysler Building, the iconic 77 floor Manhattan Art Deco monument designed by William van Alen in the 1920s. Built in Elwell’s signature style of hand formed aluminium panels, utilizing a hardwood sub-structure, the building rises from a base plinth with aluminium edging and macassar ebony inlaid veneers, repeated at each level of the stepped structure, with brass detailing and hand-formed riveted ‘windows’, terminating in the iconic scalloped, ornamental top and mast with brass detailing, which illuminates by means of a low voltage bulb fitted within the top section of the model. Featuring all of the important architectural features of the original, including ‘Radiator Cap’ gargoyles. The silver plaque on the base signed JOHN ELWELL, 1/1 2011.
Dimensions: Height overall 93 inches (236 cms) and footprint 25 inches (64 cms) square.
